The second day of the 2022 UCI Road World Championships was all about the Men’s Under 23 Time Trial event. The field had 44 starters from 31 nations competing over a rolling 28.8-kilometer course. Patrick Welch (Northfield, Minn.; Kelly Benefits Strategies) was the lone member of Team USA to take the start.
Welch started in the third of five waves. At his first intermediate time check, he posted a time of 9:45.31, slotting him into sixteenth, which he would maintain through the halfway point. With seven kilometers remaining, Welch pushed himself and moved into fourteenth on the road. As he approached the finish, he stopped the clock at 37:11.03. Norwegian rider Soren Waerenskjold clocked the fastest time of the day with a 34:14.30.

Junior Points Race and Elimination Race World Silver Medallist Chloe Patrick (Carson, Calif.; Serious Cycling) is the first American on the course, starting at 7:48 p.m. EDT. Reigning Junior Cyclocross National Champion Katherine Sarkisov (North Potomac, Md.; LUX Cycling Development Team) is next to take on the Junior Women’s 14.1-kilometer course at 8:48 p.m. EDT. The Junior Men will kick off with Alex Gustin (San Diego; LUX Cycling Development Team) at 12:16 a.m. EDT. Rounding out Team USA is Artem Shmidt (Cumming, Ga.; Hot Tubes Development Cycling), who will take on the 28.8-kilometer course at 1:54 a.m. EDT.
