Since 1940, cyclists from around the nation have come to Somerville, N.J. over Memorial Day Weekend to compete in the Tour of Somerville. Dubbed “the Kentucky Derby of Cycling,” this year’s five-day event runs from Thursday, May 24th through Monday, May 28th and includes a parade, kids’ activities, music, entertainment, great food and as well as athletic competition.
“It is not only a bike race, but a festival, a giant family reunion and more all rolled into one, while honoring American heroes on Memorial Day,” stated Michael Malekoff, Executive Director for the Tour of Somerville.
Although this race is one of the oldest races in the United States, the Tour has not stayed the same. Always looking for new ways to innovate, delight the crowds and promote the sport of cycling, they introduced a new event this year on Sunday evening, the Somerville Sprints, in which some of the nation’s top sprinters will compete in quarter-mile races.
“In 2017, a 501c3 was established with a specific mission to advance cycling, both racing and recreational, in the state of New Jersey. Free admission encourages spectators to stroll the streets while enjoying the Tour and cheering cyclists as they speed by at 40 mph past Victorian homes and main street storefronts in the borough's downtown district,” added Malekoff.
