Masters Women Shine Bright at Day Four of #CXNats

January 12, 2018 (Reno, Nev.) – Nine masters titles were decided for women on Friday at the 2018 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Reno, Nevada. The fourth day of competition also crowned winners in the non-championship Mixed Team Relay event through the pastures and hills of Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. Sunshine, warmer temperatures and course-side dinosaur sculptures from the adjacent Wilbur D. May Museum added an element of fun to the day’s racing.

Carla Williams (Roanoke, Virg./unattached) started the day by winning the Women’s Masters 30-34 title in a time of 35:22. Stacey Richardson (Lakewood, Colo./pedal RACING) followed with the win in the women’s 35-39 race, crossing the line in 37:00. The Women’s Masters 55-59 division was captured in 28:10 by Karen Brems (Redwood City, Colo./SunPower Racing).

The Women’s Masters 60+ event saw winners in three divisions. Taking the top step of the podium in the Women’s Masters 60-64 race was Susan Berates (Bellevue, Idaho/unattached) in 30:42. The 65-69 title was taken by Tove Shere (Santa Fe, N.M./Sport Systems 505 Cycling) in 34:01. The 75-79 title went to Frances Marquart (Lakewood, Wash./unattached) in 36:01.

Stacey Barbossa finally claimed the elusive Stars-and-Stripes jersey that has eluded her on five previous occasions. Barbossa (Mountainside, N.J./Colavita Midatlantic Womens Team) powered to the Women’s Masters 50-54 division in 35:50. The Women’s Masters 45-49 title was taken by Christina Gokey-Smith (Denton, Texas/RBM/Matrix Racing) in 35:03. The final Women’s Masters event for the day was won by Monica Lloyd (Olympia, Wash./Olympia Orthopaedic Associates) in 36:23 to take the 40-44 championship race.

Sixteen teams lined up for the Mixed Team Relay non-championship, won by Cycle Sport - Specialized p/b Muscle Milk in 30:16, just 11 seconds ahead of the Rage Cycling Team.
